4G is one of the most innovative internet connections to come around in a long time, offering affordable broadband in a city-wide coverage area wherever it’s available. Like any new product, it’s helpful to do a bit of research before diving in, as sometimes a new technology can be more hype than anything else. But instead of taking the direct approach for analysis, consider some of the things that this new internet connection isn’t in order to get a better idea of how it fits into your life in Houston.

1. 4G is not dial-up, which is to say that it’s not slow and unreliable. Dial-up was basically the first mainstream internet connection and it allowed people to connect easily and inexpensively during the early days of the internet. But no one ever said it was fast. Even back then it was considered somewhat slow. The internet has evolved a lot since those early days, making a dial-up connection pretty much obsolete now in terms of speed. It also isn’t very reliable, mostly due to the fact that dial-up uses phone line voice communication to deliver internet. That technology was never meant to be used for internet data delivery, and it shows.

2. It’s not cable or DSL in the sense that you won’t have to pay for any additional services. Cable and DSL employ a somewhat sneaky tactic of appearing to offer internet at a low cost, but actually not. The catch is that you can only get access to their low rates on internet if you sign up for cable TV or phone line service. Cable TV, in particular, can be quite expensive. This can be a really big issue with people that don’t even watch much TV in the first place, and possibly even a deal-breaker.

3. It’s not expensive. 4G is surprisingly affordable, even if you don’t consider the fact that you don’t have to pay for any extras. It is essentially priced the same as cable and DSL and is only slightly more expensive than dial-up. Not bad for a brand new technology.

4. It’s not available everywhere. This may be the only catch to be mindful of. 4G is a fairly new internet service that requires that a prospective city have some infrastructure built to accommodate it. Fortunately for Houston residents, everything is in place and ready to go.

5. It’s not the same old technology that people are used to. That’s because it is a wireless internet connection that delivers broadband speeds in a city-wide coverage area. But it doesn’t stop there. Subscribers also have the option of accessing their internet in an innovative way that involves the use of a USB modem. Essentially, all a user has to do is plug the USB modem into their portable computing device and they’ll be able to have access to the internet anywhere in the city-wide coverage area. They can use the internet at the park, at a friend’s house, at their favorite restaurant or bar, and even inside a moving vehicle. This is an innovation that dial-up, cable and DSL don’t even come close to matching.

4G is not working as advertised by Sprint. I am paying more for it than my previeous DSL account but is slower and works sporadically. I paid extra for the hotspot but it seems like a waste. The Sprint 4G coverage area shows I should get a solid signal. What the heck? Guess I will have to go through the painful process of returning it.

Every computer connected to the Internet is exposed to dangers. For myself and many others the benefits of using the Internet far exceed the possible dangers. We can minimize the dangers if we follow some basic security principles both for our home and office computers.

Let’s start with how we connect to the Internet using a wired connection. Many home users and small businesses connect to the Internet through a Cable/DSL modem. This type of connection is an always on connection. As long as our computers are powered on we are connected to the Internet and exposed to dangers. We increase the danger if we connect our PC directly to the Cable/DSL modem. Computers connected in this way will receive a DHCP public IP address from their Internet Service Provider. What this means is that our PC is both visible and accessible directly from the Internet. This exposes us to Internet scanning, worms, and hackers. If we don’t have a software firewall installed then our PC can be easily compromised and our data stolen.

Even though a software firewall can lessen the dangers we are exposed to when we connect in this way, I don’t recommend this method. A better solution would be to use a Cable/DSL NAT router. The NAT router would connect directly to the Cable/DSL modem and then our computer or computers would connect to the NAT router. Why is this safer?

One of the key benefits of NAT (Network Address Translation) routers is that the router hides the internal IP address of your computer or computers. The Internet sees you as a single machine with a single IP address. This effectively masks the fact that one or many computers on the LAN side of the router may be sharing that one IP address. This not only provides security benefits but also financial ones. NAT enables you to have more than one computer on your home or office network while you only have to pay for one public IP address from your ISP.

How does NAT work? When you turn on your computer you will receive an RFC1918 private IP address from your router. Usually with most Cable/DSL routers this will be on an 192.168.x.x subnet. This internal private IP will have to be changed or NATTED to a public address in order for you to be able to access the Internet. Since all computers on the LAN side of the router will share the same single IP address, the router keeps track of these outbound connections through PAT (Port Address Translation). Here is what happens. When you make an outbound call to Google, the NAT router receives this request and changes your private IP of (192.168.1.20 for example) to a public IP address say (12.46.115.225) and a port number of 2500 making it (12.46.115.225:2500). A second computer on the same LAN with an IP of (192.168.1.21) also makes an outbound request at the same time. This computer will be assigned the same public IP but a different port number say 2501 making it (12.46.115.225:2501). The NAT router keeps track of these connections in a table. It uses this table to match return connections to the correct computer on the private LAN side of the router.

This is the really good part and why the router provides added security. All traffic arriving at the NAT router that does not exactly match the traffic in the router’s table is discarded as unwanted traffic. This basically stops all unwanted inbound traffic originating from Internet scanning, worms, and hackers, protecting our computers on the private LAN side of the router from unwanted traffic from the Internet. So if you don’t already have a NAT router why not get one. The added security benefits are certainly worth the added expense.

Of course for a NAT router to provide its full benefits it has to be configured correctly. I will discuss this as well as the following subjects in future articles:
how to secure wireless networks, how to make a server available to Internet users through port forwarding safely, what is a DMZ and what are its benefits,

If you happen to live in Chicago, also known as Second City, then you are accustomed to having anything you need or want within grasp. The city offers you everything you could want, which includes high-speed Internet options. You have the option of DSL cable, satellite Internet, 4G wireless, regular wireless Internet, and dial-up modem. Of course, not every option is equal.

First, you have the option of connecting to high speed Internet with the use of DSL cable. Chicago is certainly connected to the cables necessary to make this option work. Not every location within the United States is currently connected to this technology and there is nothing you can do about it if your area is one of those places not connected. If available, it promises extremely high speeds for both downloading and uploading.

Second, you also have satellite Internet as an option for broadband. Satellite Internet gives you Internet access no matter where you live because it uses a dish to collect the signal sent from a satellite orbiting the Earth at its equator. This means Chicago residents certainly have access to this method. It also provides high speed access and is easy to use. You can even consider setting it up at the same time you set up satellite TV, giving you extended programming on your television using the same technology. It could make the services cheaper when bought together.

Third, another broadband Internet option available in Chicago is 4G wireless, which combines the benefits of high speed Internet the first two options provide with the possibility of staying mobile throughout the city on your cell phone or laptop. Wireless Internet that you can take with you all around the city will change the way you access the Internet. You will not be limited to stationary Internet and will become more productive and efficient at work. Wireless Internet by 4G will also improve your personal use of the Internet, keeping you connected to friends and family whenever and wherever you want.

Fourth, you have regular wireless Internet networks you can hook up in your home so you can access the Internet in every room. This is technically a wireless network but does not approach the mobility that 4G gives. The network is only as big as the home or building in which you install it rather than as large as the city in which you live.

Fifth, you always have the dial-up modem option, but that is not recommended. It gives you the slowest and least dependable connection. It is certainly the inferior option, but an option nonetheless.

Not every Internet access method is created equal. If you live in a large city, like Chicago for example, you have all the options at your fingertips and can decide for yourself which option works best for your Internet needs. Within each option you can also check out special deals and even additional features to customize your service for home or business. The choices are numerous, which means you have control of your service. That’s just one of the benefits to living in a large city like Chicago.

If anything is certain it’s this: times change and technologies evolve. It is the natural way of things. For example, cars evolved from being clunky and slow to being fast and stream-lined. Computers evolved from being cumbersome and sluggish to being small and amazingly fast. Internet connectivity is no different. At first, only slow and unreliable dial-up connections were widely available. Now, home users can sign up for fast, reliable, and wireless Wimax service.

Wireless technologies weren’t always as good as they are now. This can even be seen in the realm of home networking. Previous generations of wireless routers were unreliable, slow, and had limited range. The latest products now offer fast transfer rates that can keep up with wired counterparts as well as vastly increased range of usage.

Wireless internet connectivity has also gone through major changes. Before the current generation of technology, there was 3G. To be fair, 3G was always touted as a cell phone technology, but regardless of its purpose it just never quite measured up to wired counterparts. Although it has a fairly wide area of coverage now, it is just not powerful enough for all that the internet has to offer.

Wimax is a more evolved wireless connection. It too is based on cellular infrastructure, so it can be used in a mobile capacity just like 3G. That means you can take it with you anywhere in the city-wide coverage area just like how you can take your cell phone all around town. All you’ll need is a USB modem or PC card and a portable computing device such as a laptop. It would be as simple as plugging in your modem to your device. You’d be able to use the internet at your favorite restaurant, in your backyard, at your friend’s place, and even in a moving vehicle. Try using your cable or DSL connection in those capacities.

Most people have reservations about this new service because it is wireless. They tend to think that it will suffer from unreliable performance and slow transfer rates. But thanks to the evolution of technology, those are concerns that you won’t have to worry about any longer. Wimax is mature and it will give you renewed faith in wireless technology. It may even go so far as to question your faith in wires because it will outperform many standard installations of cable and DSL.

The only potential worry arises from the fact that there is a coverage area. Your service would be perfectly fine within your city, but if you should happen to stray too far away you could end up losing your signal. Fortunately, many plans out there allow your equipment to switch over to the 3G network in these cases. 3G service will not be nearly as fast but at least you won’t be left in the dark. You’d still be able to do some light browsing and emailing. Wimax coverage is expanding all the time so this will probably not be an issue for long.

Between the advent of the modern mail system, to the development of electronic means of communication such as the telephone, our ability to share thoughts and ideas with other people has gone from days to hours, to seconds. The main proponent of this improved communication speed is the internet. The internet allows us to share any and all kinds of information between just about anyone in the whole world. From simple text, to photos, videos, and music, you can share just about anything with anyone anywhere. This technology has enabled the rapid advancement of subjects such as Science, Medicine, and person to person communication, but it has also contributed to the decline in the arts, physical talent, and overall health.

The question is, how does this modern communication marvel work?

First, to access the internet you will need a computer. Just a simple, CPU, monitor, keyboard, and mouse will do. This machine takes all the signals it receives from the modem and converts it into understandable letters, movies, and sounds for humans. Second, you will need access to the internet via a modem. A modem is kind of like a telephone in the way that it accepts the information, and relays it to the handset (computer) so that we can interact with it. Depending on the modem you have you can get faster (or slower) information transfer. The speed of your modem usually depends on your service provider. Most providers offer DSL (which stands for Digital Satellite Link) speed, while others do offer faster speeds such as broadband or T1 (which are faster speeds) for things such as videos, photos, movies and other media that usually requires more time to download, or transfer between locations.

Some people feel that wiring their computer directly into their modem is the only way to access the internet, but a relatively new advancement in internet technology is wireless internet, meaning that you can access the internet from anywhere within the range of your router. The way wireless internet works is instead of plugging your computer into the modem, you plug in a piece of equipment called a router. A router’s function is to relay the internet signal to a wireless card which is either plugged into your computer, or already built in to your computer. Some people, upon discovering wireless internet, have found that many of their neighbors already have a wireless network established.

In short, the internet is a vast “web” of connected people, places, and ideas. No matter how you access it or how you use it once you are connected, you are free to share your ideas, experiences, and memories with anyone in the world who is willing to listen. This gives a person a great amount of freedom to do what they so choose with, often with little to no responsibility at all.

It would save you more money and think of the amount of money you could save in the long run!

If you have just one PC at home, you can probably think of many reasons to set up another computer. One of the best reasons to have multiple PCs is to allow two or more people to access the Internet at one time.

But that kind of convenience comes with a catch. Even if you plan on installing multiple computers, your home probably has only one internet connection. This means you need to find a way for all those PCs to share that single connection.

If this news is enough to make you rethink that second PC, it shouldn’t be. Once your computers are set up to share an Internet connection, they’ll be able to share just about anything else. How’s that for convenience?

First, You Need a Network

There are two different ways to share an internet connection, but both require that the computers be networked together. The idea of setting up a home network might seem intimidating, but it shouldn’t be. If your needs are simple, you can easily find home networking kits that contain all the hardware and software you need to do the job, for surprisingly little money.

If your computers are in the same room or are separated only by a wall, then you should be able to set up a wire-based network without too much effort. Otherwise consider installing a wireless network. Although wireless networks are bit more expensive, they give you greater flexibility than wired networks. With a wireless LAN, for example, you can move your computers to different rooms and still they are connection to the network.

Of course, it’s beyond the scope of this article to teach you how to set up a network, even a very small one. But there are plenty of resources that can help you get started.

Sharing Broad Band Connection

If you homes internet connection is broadband, using a cable modem or DSL connection, then it should be easy to share. The first PC should already be connected to the cable or DSL modem via network interface card and cable. To add another computer to this type of internet connection, install an inexpensive router (hub/switch), For about $50, these devices allow two or more PCs to share a connection.

Connect the modem to the router, and then connect each of the PCs to the router by running the appropriate type of cable from each PC’s network interface card to one of the routers available port. (of course, wireless options are available as well, but your PC’s will need wireless NICs that are compatible with a wireless router)

When you share a broadband connection this way , it’s usually “plug-n-play” affair. If your components are well matched, and if you are using windows Xp or higher, Your PCs will be online as soon as the connection is established.

Connecting The Office

When creating your business network no technology solves all the problems; but rather, a heterogeneous network is the most efficient way to build a great office network. In the office there are devices that plug into the wall or wired devices such as your desktop computers, servers, and printers as well as after hours devices such as gaming consoles and set top boxes. Other devices in the office are mobile such as Laptops, NetBooks, SmartPhones, iPads, and other tablets. The best network for mobile devices is not the best network for fixed devices and visa versa.

Even the two standards, Wi-Fi Alliance® and HomePlug® Powerline Alliance, have collaborated creating heterogeneous networks combining the two network technologies. The cooperation is based on selecting the right network technology for the specific device to be connected to the network.

The best network for wired devices is direct Ethernet and HomePlug. However, since these devices require electricity from an electrical output and may be moved from time-to-time, HomePlug is the best choice. In addition, many devices such as printers and gaming consoles do not support a WiFi connection. HomePlug AV supports speeds up to 200 Mbps and is highly reliable for demanding applications like gaming and streaming video. Actual speeds vary based on the environment and distance. In most cases speeds range from 90Mbps to 120Mbps. The advantage HomePlug has over Ethernet is when you move the wired device to another outlet you can also move your HomePlug adapter to that outlet as well. With Ethernet you would need to run new wires unless your office was already wired for Ethernet.

The best network for mobile devices is a network that allows mobility. WiFi is currently the best solution. Specifically, the WiFi standard ratified in 2009 known as 802.11n, supports up to 300Mbps. Actual speeds vary greatly depending on the environment and distance. Most often speeds range from 90Mbps to 120Mbps. Since mobile devices, by design, are intended to move around the office, WiFi is the ideal networking technology to support these devices.

Two Network Technologies Working Together

The challenge is putting together your business network using several different networking technologies. Let’s start with the common source of data, the Internet connection. Internet connections for business typically are Digital Subscriber Lines (DSL) or wireless broadband. Occasionally, cable broadband is available. When these Internet connections are installed in the business by your Service Provider the installer leaves a modem or router. Typically you can request a modem, router (which includes a modem), or wireless router (which includes a modem and router). Sometimes your Service Provider only offers a modem. We’ll make the assumption a modem was installed.

Modems take the signal coming from your Service Provider and convert it to a standard Internet Protocol (IP) that will work on a CAT 5 Ethernet connection, simply referred to as Ethernet. The modem has a single RJ5 physical connector. This is your business network connection to the Internet. This connection can be shared if you attach a router to it. A router attaches to a single Ethernet connection and shares it with your entire business.

There are several ways to share the connection. The most common way would be to attach a router to the Ethernet connection. Most routers have several Ethernet ports on them. You can attach each computer, printer, game console or other device directly to the router Ethernet port. This would typically require these devices to be in close proximity to the router or running Ethernet cables around the office through the ceilings or on the floor.

Another way to share the connection is to connect a Wireless Router to the Ethernet connection. This allows all devices supporting WiFi connections within the range of the wireless signal to share the Internet connection.

A third way to share the connection is to attach a HomePlug Ethernet adapter to a router or wireless router connected to the Ethernet connection and plug it into a wall electrical outlet. Now, any device needing a network connection can be plugged into a HomePlug Ethernet adapter anywhere there is an electrical wall outlet in the office.

These three methods are not exclusive of each other. In fact, as discussed above, select the best method of connection based on the device. Connect a Wireless Router to the Service Providers supplied Ethernet connection. Then, connect a HomePlug Ethernet adapter to an Ethernet port on the Wireless Router and plug the HomePlug Ethernet adapter into a wall electrical outlet. Now, any device supporting WiFi within range of the Wireless Router and any device supporting Ethernet within range of the HomePlug Adapter can share the Internet connection.
